Course Description

In March 1999, the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) initiated the formation of a Pedestrian and Bicycle Task Force to develop better information for transportation professionals on pedestrian and bicycle facilities. In the summer of 2001, the Task Force became an ITE Council. One of the projects identified by the Task Force members was the need to provide better information on bicycle innovations. Many jurisdictions are employing new bikeway and bicycle parking design treatments. The intent of this report is to identify innovations and share information on their applications, advantages and disadvantages. Approximately 50 treatments are summarized in this report. These treatments include on-street innovations such as contra-flow bike lanes, shared bike/bus lanes, bike boulevards, raised bike lanes, bicycle parking and color treated bike lanes. There is information on trail facilities including one-way trails, roundabouts and median trails. This technical report, which is divided into eight sections, also summarizes treatments for bicycles at intersections, bicycle detection, unique bicycle signs, traffic calming accommodations for bicycles, and bicycle parking.

Comments on Webinar

"It is a great format. It allows many of us to gather in the conference room during lunch hour to attend the seminar in a very efficient and limited timeframe. The hour length is fantastic. It fits into our brown bag lunch seminar plan."

"In an environment where time management is so crucial, it is wonderful to be able to attend a meaningful seminar with such little ancillary time commitments such as travel and coordination. My compliments. ASCE has found the perfect seminar format for today's busy professional."
